| You can click on the pictures on this page for a larger version. I've always liked the idea of including a Merry Christmas sign in Christmas displays. I much prefer them to the generic "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays" signs (see the Why We Decorate page for more of our feelings on this). Long before the large computer controlled Merry
Christmas sign seen in our display came the original version of the rope light Merry
Christmas sign seen to the left. I made this sign in 1992 as a gift for The original version had every other letter alternating red and green. This was because using mini-lights, it turned out to be difficult to read the sign when I originally did it up with the color scheme shown above. Therefore, Dad and I had a fun evening of "bulb switcharoo" which made the sign more readable. In 2000, the sign was beginning to show its age. The wooden frame had warped badly, most of the bulbs had lost their color, and in the end, a chunk of the sign went out completely. I decided it was time for a complete overhaul. First, I made a brand new frame out of PVC water pipe and fittings. This makes for an extremely sturdy frame, without the risk of warping. To this frame I reattached the original Merry Christmas-shaped clothesline wire (which ended up being the only thing salvaged from the original). Finally, rope light had become cheap and plentiful-- and was ideal for this application. Cathy and I attached the rope light with several hundred wire ties, As you can see, the result is extremely attractive and readable, and brings back my originally-intended color scheme. It makes a really nice feature as part of Mom's display. Here is a picture of my Mom's display from 2001,
